Inflation is the term used to describe the rise of average prices throughout the economy over the course of a year. Statistics New Zealand publishes the Consumers Price Index CPI which records the change in the price of a "basket" of goods and services purchased by an average New Zealand household. The rate of change between the CPI from one year to the next is known as the inflation rate.
